Have you ever visited Scotland and had a bacon roll?

If not, you should!

Put it on your bucket list!

And when you have a bacon roll, have it at The Horn!

What is a Bacon Roll?

A bacon roll is simply a ‘softie’ — soft bread roll — packed full of crispy bacon and no one does it better than The Horn.

You can eat it as-is or top it with ketchup or brown sauce. Or add a fried egg.

But the star of this sandwich is the crispy bacon and The Horn isn’t afraid to give you your fair portion and more!

Some shops don’t cook the British bacon long enough and it can be chewy. The Horn found that sweet spot for crispy — but not burnt — bacon. I always ask them to give me the extra crispy pieces.

Officially, it’s called the Horn Milk Bar when you look online, but everyone I know just calls it “The Horn” like their sign.

The Horn is a roadside diner. Its location makes it a perfect pit stop when traveling from Aberdeenshire to the Edinburgh / Glasgow area.

Having lived at various times in Scotland for over six years over the two decades, I’ve had my share of road trips and visits to The Horn.

When we had visitors from the States, it was always a planned stop if we were traveling in the morning.

For those of you in the know about Buc-ee’s in Texas (and their expansion to other states), you know a road trip pit-stop is planned around locations such as this.

The Horn is not a fancy place, but they are very good at making Scottish breakfast foods, have great coffee, and have a small gift shop with various Scottish novelties.

To me, the atmosphere feels local and welcoming. It’s not like a tourist restaurant along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It serves authentic Scottish breakfast foods that are tasty.

When I travel, I like to ask locals for their favorite places. I will bet if you ask a Scot where the best bacon roll is found, they will tell you The Horn.

Takeaways

If you find yourself in Scotland and can swing by The Horn, DO IT!

Their bacon rolls are so tasty and filling.

Some tips for you:

  • Add a fried egg to it for some gooey yolk to ooze over the bacon as you eat. Yum!
  • Don’t order two! One is plenty — both for your meal and your health!
  • Have a ‘milky coffee’ with it.

The Horn’s bacon roll will keep you full and going for the whole morning.

And, you will enjoy it for sure! Unless you’re vegetarian or have other dietary restrictions, but if that’s the case I assume stopped reading this article and didn’t get to this.

Enjoy Life and Thanks for Reading,

-Jeff
